What makes a good identifier?

A unique identifier may be any of the following:

Electrical Items i.e. digital cameras, iPod/mp3s, laptops, power tools, audio/visual equipment, sat navs etc..

If you're checking against an electrical item, you should seek the serial number. This is a unique number typically found on the back or base of the item, or inside the battery compartment if accessible. Alternatively, check the packaging or documentation that came with the item.

Cellular Phone

If you're checking against a cellular phone, you should seek the IMEI or ESN number. This is a unique number typically obtained by dialing *#06# if available on your handset. Alternatively, it may be found printed inside the battery compartment as shown below.

Antiques, Jewellery and Collectibles

If you're checking against antiques, art, jewellery or collectibles, try to find a unique identifier such as an engraving label, a microdot, a UV pen marking or even a forensic liquid code.
